One Choice Will Free Him

My book takes place in a city, were people are split in different groups based on their personalities: abnegation, the selfless; dauntless, the brave; candor, the honest; amity, the peaceful erudite, the intelligent; the sixteen year old Tobias Eaton, son of Marcus Eaton, abnegation council member, is about to make his decision for a faction in his unseen community for what it seems to be for rest of his life... Throughout the first section of the book called "The Transfer," readers can observe that Tobias is shy and doesn’t have many friends due to the fact that he has an abusive father. Moving on, Tobias meets Tori, dauntless member, who administers his aptitude test; the results came out as he expected...abnegation because his father had already instructed him what to do inside the test. The Choosing Ceremony arrived, Tobias name is called; he hesitates for a moment, then his decision is clear and he chose...DAUNTLESS. To enter the dauntless quarters, all the new members had to complete a series of tests; there he meets Eric, a fellow dauntless initiate, along with his instructor Amar. Amar is the one that later on gave Tobias the name of "Four", after finding out that he has only four fears.

The song "Brave" by Sara Barreils, describes what Tobias did in the Choosing Ceremony the moment he decided to split from his former faction and start to see for himself an his future.

“You're the one who has to live with your choice, everyone else will get over it, move on, no matter what you decide. But you never will” (Roth 5)

The quote mention before, catched my eye at the very beginning of the book, when Tori and Tobias were inside the room for his aptitude test and Tori, the one administering it, notice in the boy´s face the he was unpleased wit the results she had just mention. The moment I read the quote, I thought that Tori only wanted to help him and let him know that he can trust her, but the moment Tobias replies so sharply, like a robot, she could observe that something was wrong with his life and that he was kind of force to act that way. Going out of the literary space, this phrase use in the book was so meaningful for me because it made me realize that I make my decision because at the end of the day, the consequences of them are only going to affect me physically and psychologically. Also, it open my eyes with the fact that my parents and relatives can move on with the choices I make, so I have t start thinking for myself and only accept their comments and opinions as options for my final choice.

“The truth is, I want my choice to drive a knife right through my father’s heart, to pierce him with as much pain and embarrassment and disappointment as possible. There is only one choice that can do that.” (Roth 31)

When I read the quote, I tried to put myself in Tobias situation and I thought that it must be really hard to live with someone that doesn’t appreciate me for who I am and thinks that I am only a burden so I have to be hidden from the rest of the world. But, on the other side, I felt sorry for him because getting to the point were I end up wanting to hurt my family really makes me feel depressed and kind of angry. Is true that sometimes my parents tell me to do things that I don’t want to do or hit me because I had misbehave and of course I wanted to do something to them, but then when I calm down I feel terrible for had wanting that. Looking at this phrase from Tobias point of view is something normal because he is following Tori´s advice and making the decision seeing the consequences for himself, but at the same time he wanted his father to know how much he had hurt him that he chooses being far away from him instead of staying close to him.

The four fears of Tobias Eaton, which helped Amar, gave him the name
In conclusion, the first section of the book "Four," written by Veronica Roth named "The Transfer" has really made me look in my life and realize things I never thought that were important. This book has start being genuinely appealing for me due to the fact that is uses a simple language structure and its the kind of books that possibly can never happen but at the same time, while you are reading it you imagine yourself living in that kind of situation. I think that the second section in the book is going to bring a lot more drama and suspense to the book because I think that Four is going to demonstrate what he is really made of, but Eric is going to be like an obstacle for him to reach his maximum potential. Moreover, I think that Tobias is going to become a completely different person making him take decision he never thought he would. Finally, Amar is going to play a very important role in Tobias´s life because he is going to help him with his self-esteem and convince him that he is nothing close to what Marcus made him belief.
